How to Make a Clothespin Butterfly

This whimsical Clothespin Butterfly is a fun kids craft idea which takes only a little extra skill to complete and you  get to use up your stash of foam shapes and clothespins. This creative Clothespin Butterfly can also be used as a note holder on your refrigerator.

So let’s get started.

How to Make a Clothespin Butterfly

First, let’s get everything ready so you can leave the little ones to get busy and avoid all those interruptions.

Skill Level – Medium

Time Required – 15 minutes

What you will need

• Clothespin
• Glitter glue
• Foam shapes – hearts, circles, squares
• Pipe cleaner / Chenille stick
• Magnets
• Googly eyes
• Scissors
• Glue

Step 1

Cover the face of the clothespin with the glitter glue.  When it drys you will have a sparkly clothespin.

Step 2

Add a little craft glue to the googly eyes and place at the top of the peg. Remember you are making a magnetic note holder so the top of the clothespin is the part that you squeeze together.

Step 3

Now for the wings. In this example, it shows colorful foam hearts being used but if you don’t have any try other shapes or you could cut some out of colored foam.

Put a small amount of glue at the bottom of the hearts and stick to the peg about 1/2 inch below the eyes.

For a bit of extra color, glue on a small shape to the front of the hearts. This helps cover the join of the bottom of the heart and makes it look like a bow.

Step 4

If you would like some sparkly wings, use the glitter glue to go around the edge. Once the glitter glue has dried it’s time for your child to draw on a mouth.

Step 5

If you are going to use your Clothespin Butterfly as a note holder for the refrigerator cut a couple pieces of magnet and glue to the back of the clothespin.

Other Ideas

• If you don’t have any glitter glue you could try normal glitter or your child can draw on a fun pattern on the clothespin
