So let’s get started.

How to Make an Egg Carton Caterpillar

First, let’s get everything ready so you can leave the little ones to get busy and avoid all those interruptions.

Skill Level – Easy

Time Required – 20 minutes

What you will need

  • Egg carton
  • Paints
  • Pipe cleaners / Chenille sticks
  • Googly eyes
  • Glue / Sticky tape
  • Scissors
  • Felt tip pen
  • Craft knife or compass

Step 1

Cut your egg carton in half, straight down the middle so you have two bodies with six humps and trim it so it sits nicely on the table.

Step 2

Now it’s time for the fun part so get your paints out and let your kids go crazy using their imagination to paint the body. They could paint each hump a different color or maybe try paint spots or stripes. There’s no right or wrong way it’s just about having fun.

Step 3

Once the body has dried its time to get creative with the face. Get your kids to add the googly eyes and draw on a mouth.

Step 4

Now use your craft knife or compass to poke two holes at the top of the head about 2 cm apart these are going to be used for the antenna.

Cut a short piece of pipe cleaner and thread through the head so you have two even pieces of pipe cleaner popping through the top then tape or glue into place.

Your child can now shape the antenna and you’re done.

Now that your child’s project is finished they have a new toy to play with and you get some time to yourself. You’ve earned it.

Other Ideas

  • Why not decorate them with pom poms or glitter if you have some in your craft box.
  • Or how about making some ants by cutting the egg carton into quarters and using pipecleaners for the legs.
